Is Your Property Inventory Up to Date?

Fire loss in homes and outbuildings can bring many painful emotions. During that process, you will need to work with your insurance carrier to provide a list of the property's inventory value. Without photos, videos, or copies to guide you through the process, you risk underreporting your belongings—or unintentionally overstating their value, which could be considered fraud. To avoid this, we suggest taking inventory of your belongings. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Go through each room in your home and outbuildings, taking photos and videos. Be sure to show dates purchased or model numbers, if applicable.
    • You will want to save these on cloud storage, so even if your phone or camera is damaged, you still have access to them.
    • If you prefer to print your photos out, be sure to store them in a fireproof safe or off your property in a secure location.
  • Make a home inventory checklist. This can be a digital or physical copy. A printable version is attached below.
    • This is best done room by room. Be sure to write down the model or year the items were purchased.
    • These lists will be quite large. Be sure to update it if you get a new sofa or household appliance, so it is up to date.
  • If you have the option to save something in a cloud environment, be sure to do so. Photos, documents, etc.
    • Physical items that can be stored in a fireproof save like birth certificates, marriage/divorce papers, wills/ trust, vehicle titles, house deeds, passports, etc.
